Less than 30 minutes by car, Avebury Stone Circle should not be missed while you are in the area. Far more spectacular than Stonehenge - in our opinion- you can while away the hours wandering among the ancient stones. The village of Avebury itself offers plenty of places to eat and shop. A fantastic day out for all the family, beautiful house and gardens and a fun play areas for the kids with an adventure playground with aerial rope walks, giant slides and a life-size pirate galleon. From late April to eraly June the Rhododendron Walks offer a spectacular stroll through a blaze of colour and close by is the Bowood spa and golf complex. Website

This flight of 16 locks may be the most impressive anywhere on the UK's waterways. They were engineer John Rennie's solution to climbing the very steep hill in Devizes, and were the last part of the 87 mile route of the Kennet & Avon Canal to be completed. Lacock village is about 45 minutes away between Melksham and Chippenham. Perfect for the whole family as both Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice were filmed there along with a multitude of other popular films and costume dramas. The entire village belongs to the National Trust and visitors from abroad just love its multitude of character cottages, the church, the Abbey and the Fox Talbot Photographic museum.
